29 August, Wednesday - Shawnee OK

Alarm set for 6am, we are meeting at the Rally at 7am for an early breakfast before our tour of the Tinker Air Force Base, leaving at 8am.  We passed by this massive Air Force Base last year and googled it to find it was one of the largest in the country and this year we are lucky enough to be actually on the base and getting a tour.

We had to jump through a lot of security hoops to get to into the base. The whole base has grown to over 5,000 acres with two 10,000 foot runways and employs 7,000 military people and 15,000 civilians so it is huge.

We tour a KC-135 Air Refueling Tanker which was really interesting, I got to lay down in the position where the refueler would manouevre the boom to connect to the aircraft below, it was really cool!

No comfort spared!

The boom can extend another 20 feet to perform the refueling
The bus arrives back at the Rally before 1pm and we decide lunch has to be next, it was a long time since our early breakfast of fruit and pastries, so off to Cracker Barrel we go with L&L.  Back to the Rally for a quick visit with Stan and Jill before the Safari Business Meeting where the usual issue, as for all clubs, of membership and elected positions is laboured over for some time.  The long meeting is immediately followed by HH and dinner, very generous they are too.

The evening’s entertainment is Bingo, we weren’t going to stay but we all have raffles in the 50/50 prize so need to wait and see who wins that.  We  are so happy we stayed - Lois won the last game of Bingo with a prize pool if $1,000, but she had to share with another winner.  Very happy!!

Oklahoma Facts:  Boise City OK was the only city in the US to be bombed during WWII - six practice bombs were dropped on the sleeping town on July 5, 1943.  The Oklahoma bombing of April 19, 1995 is considered the deadliest domestic terrorist attack in the nation's history until September 11, 2001.  Famous actors from Oklahoma - Brad Pitt (actually born in Shawnee), Chuck Norris, Tony Randall, James Garner and Ron Howard.
